Concept
Influenced by conceptual and installation arts practice, where meaning, language, context and experience are the main ingredients, Lauren’s project-based work is primarily concerned with structure and its relationship to the public and politics:
the physical structure of architecture and infrastructure;
the metaphysical structure of rhythms, cycles and habits;
or the antithesis of these in destruction and entropy.
Her work is currently focused on sound in the public space.
Practice
Lauren has developed a practice for which cross/trans/inter-disciplinary projects are crucial. The point of intersection between two disciplines is where the excitement lies.
Lauren has exhibited in a variety of spaces in Melbourne, Sydney, Bendigo, Newcastle, Wollongong, London and Hamburg. She is part of the Australia Council’s inaugural Geek-in-Resience Program and has received an ArtStart Grant and Funding from Yarra City Council.
With a Master of Art in the Public Space, via a photographic and print-based background, her works encompass installation, performance, print, video, fashion, jewellery and object-based works.
She uses red as a prime indicator because there is nothing ambiguous about red. It always says something.
Collaboration
Life is too short to not join forces with other people who are doing similar things and interested in similar ideas.
Lauren is half of the collaborative duo, The Candystripers, with pop-artist Gemma Jones; she may or may not be part of An Artist and A Curator - renegade public interventionists and has previously made an arts centre from gingerbread with a chef and some architects.
She is currently developing projects with a jeweller, a music producer, some offset printers and a photographer.
